WELCOME

Welcome to Green is the Color of My Life! Are you looking for ways to make your home, lifestyle, garden, or business GREEN? Maybe you already recycle, but you are ready to take your sustainable practices further? You have come to the right place. I will take you through the various shades of going green and show you good-better-best practices for how to be green in all aspects of your life.

If you feel daunted about making your life greener, fear not! As I am in the process of becoming greener myself, this site is dedicated to documenting my progress and my research. Learn from me and my family on how to do things…or how not to do things. My aim is to create step by step instructions to make it easier to incorporate sustainable practices into real life. We will explore hurdles, study evidence, and consider solutions.

Do you have the misconception that “going green” is expensive? It doesn’t have to be! In fact, implementing sustainable practices can save you money most of the time. Saving electricity, conserving water, recycling, composting, all of these practices not only help our planet, they also help your pocketbook. Now that is really green!

There is no one right way that will work for all people. You must analyze your life and figure out how far you can and want to go toward living an environmentally sustainable life. Sometimes deciding to move your residence to avoid a long commute may be the right choice. For others, taking public transportation is the solution. From A to Z, we will explore a range of solutions to help you make the best possible decisions for you!

ABOUT ME

Hello, I am Kate, environmental consultant, business owner, mother, wife, Girl Scout leader, scientist, beekeeper, gardener, elected official, singer, sometimes-runner, dog-walker, and former roller derby player. I like to keep busy! A rundown of who I am:

  1. I was raised and have rooted myself in Illinois. Not born here, but this is all I remember. In my first year of life, I lived in New York and California, but I don’t remember a thing! I have two younger sisters and two wonderful parents, who have been excellent roll-models for me and now as grandparents for my children.
  2. I am happily married to Jake since 2005. Even though he can’t dance, he is my Mr. Perfect! Mostly because he lets me be my crazy self. He is never surprised when I tell him, for example, that I want to join a roller derby team, at the same time that I am working full-time, going to graduate school, volunteering as treasurer for a non-profit, and being mom to a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old. I keep him on his toes!
  3. My older daughter, “Gladys” was born in 2006. She is very bright and loves to figure skate. I could see her becoming an attorney or judge someday. She is decisive and self-assured, kind and helpful, creative and very driven to be her best self.
  4. My younger daughter, “Agnes” was born in 2009. She devours books. I laugh at the reading incentives that come home from school. She would complete the challenge in a weekend without even trying. Yes, she reads that much. She is into Tae Kwon Do and basketball. She also loves music and will start piano lessons very soon.
  5. After working my way up to assistant manager of a local bank for 5 years, I went back to school to finish my Bachelor degree in Cell & Molecular Biology and Sociology. Sociology was my accidental major; I loved it so much, I just kept taking classes and getting A’s!
  6. While working in a toxicology lab for 4 years doing research on heavy metal poisoning in rats, I received my Master degree in Public Health, focusing on Environmental Health and Epidemiology.
  7. After working for 5 years in an industrial manufacturing facility as an environmental compliance specialist, I quit my job to start my own company of one in 2016. Being self-employed has been an adventure. Despite my growing pains, I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
  8. Since 2014, when my younger daughter was ready for Daisies in kindergarten, I stepped up to start a Girl Scout troop for her age level. I have fallen in love with the Girl Scout program for its focus on science and environment. At first, I wanted nothing to do with the cookies, but after my older daughter joined Brownies with her friends, I realized that it is so much more than cookies! I also took over as leader for my older daughter’s troop the following year.
  9. My newest adventure is my recent appointment to fill a seat on our local county board. My mind is swirling with all of the information. And sooner than I’d like to think, I am also going to have to get ready for the next election. You can thank Donald Trump for this. I’ve held signs at protests, but this seems more effective. This is how I am stepping up and getting involved.
  10. The sky is the limit for me. I don’t ask: may I? can I? should I? I ask: how? when? and I jump in with both feet! Life is an adventure. I don’t get bored, I get busy. I am grateful for everything, every day. I love deeply and I appreciate the uniqueness of every individual on this planet. This planet is getting crowded and we must take care of her and respect this blue marble floating in space. This website is dedicated to keeping our Mother Earth a clean safe place to live.
